Phone calls are harder than face-to-face talking because you cannot see the other person. Short polite phrases and asking people to repeat things are completely normal.

Starting the call

Hi, it's Sam speaking.A natural way to say who you are.
Could I speak to Jordan, please?Polite and clear.
I'm calling about the rental listing.Say the reason early.
Is now a good time?Useful when you call someone directly.
Tip: Australians say "mobile" or "mobile phone" for what some countries call a "cell phone". You may also hear "I'll give you a ring" or "a call".

When you don't understand

Sorry, could you say that again, please?A polite way to ask for repetition.
Could you speak a little slower, please?Completely normal to ask.
Could you spell that for me?Great for names and email addresses.
Let me just check I've got that right.Repeat the details back to confirm.

Ending the call

Could I leave a message?If the person is not available.
Could you ask them to call me back?Then give your name and number slowly.
Thanks for your help. Have a good day!A friendly ending.
